In 1937 at the Kiev art institute the post of the teacher of physical education appeared which was by Kh. Berman. In 1943 the faculty of military preparation of the officers of reserve was based at the institute. The senior teacher M. Kokun worked in its staff and was engaged in physical preparation of the students. Since 1948 Kh. Berman again provided the physical education of the students. The chair of physical education was created by his efforts in 1957, where the outstanding expert in rehabilitation and medical physical culture, doctor F. Glaz, teachers Yu. Belyachenko, B. Bunchuk, L. Grakovsky, V. Tomashevsky worked at that time. In 1977 the senior teacher P. Lavrynenkov was elected the head of the chair. L. Babych, M. Kokun, candidate in psychological sciences O. Kokun, V. Storchak, L. Tovchenko worked there as teachers. Since 2001 the senior teacher V. Tomashevsky supervises the faculty.
     The students of the Kiev art institute repeatedly became the champions of competitions of higher educational institutions in the system of the Ministry of culture of the USSR (1954-1974) during the years of existence of the chair of physical education. In particular, the students - champions of competitions were the present rector of the academy, academician A. V. Chebykin, professors of the academy V. Shatalin, V. Chekaniuk, V. Shvetsov, senior teachers S. Zoruk, V. Chervatiuk and others (trainer - master in sports V. Tomashevsky).
     The combined teams of the art institute won the first places in competitions of higher educational institutions of the Ministry of culture of the Ukrainian SSR on volleyball, basketball, table - tennis, badminton from 1960 till 1980. There were great achievements in bullet shooting, for example, of the student of that time, and nowadays professor of the academy V. Chebanyk, master in sports V. Rozhkov.
     The institute's combined team on tourism reached high sports results in 1970-1980. It took high places in different competitions among teams of Kyiv and Ukraine (trainer E. Feldman). During the period 1990-1996 the faculty prepared 2 masters in sports on academic rowing: the honourable ranks were given to the senior teacher of the chair O. Kokun and the student T. Glushchuk. In 1990th they got a rank of the champions of Ukraine11 times. O. Kokun took part in two world championships in the body of combined team of Ukraine (1993, 1996) and in the championship of Europe (1995).
     As a whole the sportsmen of institute have received 26 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals in competitions of all-Ukrainian and international level. The scientific work is carried out at the chair. The senior teacher O. Kokun has defended the dissertation "Monitoring and correction of psycho - physiological adaptation of the sportsmen of higher qualification" and gained a scientific degree of the candidate in psychological sciences. He published more than 30 scientific works during 1994-2001.
     The senior lecturer P. Lavrynenkov prepared for printing the manuscript of the manual "Physical exercises at independent training" for the students of higher educational institutions which was approved by the Ministry of culture and arts of Ukraine in 1997.
