Till 1961 there was a methodical union in the Kiev Art Institute (now National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture) formed by sections of foreign languages, physical culture, etc. At the head of the union stood the pro-rector on the scientific work I. Grabovsky. The section of foreign languages consisted of three teachers: R. Voronova (English), S. Illyuschenko (German) and the teacher of French.
It was in 1961 when the new pedagogical faculty was opened and the quantity of students increased in the educational institution which led to the foundation of the Foreign Languages Department. The body of the new-founded department, besides the above-mentioned teachers, joined N.
Volkovynska and T. Kosyachenko. N. Volkovynska became the head of the department. Later, having increased the volume of educational works, the laboratory of foreign languages was opened at the department.
The main task of the department is to provide students with knowledge in the volume sufficient for fluent communication with foreigners and join the world culture with the help of the original literature. Educational programmes and methods of teaching are elaborated according to the type of the educational institution, methodical works on English, German and French were published.
In 1992 art criticism and management faculty, post-graduate and assistance-probationer courses were founded, the teaching staff of the department increased. In 1993 the section of Ukrainian and Russian languages as the foreign ones joined the body of the department.
O. Yudenko is the head of the department from July, 1997. Today there work 11 staff teachers including senior lecturers, readers in philological sciences O. Brechak and A. Karpus.
