   The chair of sculpture, as well as the sculptural faculty, were created at the academy eight decades ago, when this educational institution was reorganized and was named the Kiev institute of plastic arts in 1922, and the Kiev art institute in 1924. Then the chair of sculpture started to work under the leadership of the sculptor B. Kratko.
     From the second half of 1920-th and during the 1930-th the sculptors I. Gelman, Zh. Dindo, I. Severa, P. Ulianov worked at the chair. The sculptor from Leningrad L. Shervud was invited to work at the chair as a teacher and adviser in 1936, who worked there for two years. At the end of the 1920-th the formal - technical disciplines were taught at the sculptural faculty by the artists K. Malevych, Ye. Sagaydachny, V. Tatlin.
     The sculptor M. Gelman was the head of the chair during 1937-1947. Such masters in plastic art as M. Lysenko and L. Muravin began teaching in 1944 and M. Vronsky - since 1948. The training took place in two creative studios - of easel sculpture (the leader - M. Gelman) and of monumental sculpture (the leader - M. Lysenko).
     After 1948 O. Oliynyk became the head of the chair. The teachers G. Gutman, I. Shapoval, A. Shapran began to work together with him, and I. Makogon - since 1954.
     During 1960th two educational-creative studios - of M. Lysenko and O. Oliynyk carried out the graduation of young sculptors. V. Boroday started to work at the sculptural faculty and also headed the studio in 1966. In 1967 the graduate of the sculptural faculty of the institute V. Sukhenko came on teaching work, and in 1970th the teaching staff was filled up with the young artists - sculptors V. Shvetsov, M. Olexiyenko, V. Chepelyk, in 1990th A. Gonchar, Yu. Kyseliov, B. Lysenko, O. Redko, B. Mazur.
     The professor M. Vronsky was the head of the chair of sculpture during 1963-1987. After him till now this post occupies V. Shvetsov. Such teachers of the chair as O. Oliynyk, V. Boroday and V. Borysenko successfully worked on the post of the rector in different years.
     The chair of sculpture carries out educational work with the students of six years of studying. During the first three years of studying the general educational training is carried out, and then the students pass training in two educational-creative studios of the professor V. Chepelyk and professor V. Shvetsov. The methodical fund is kept at the chair and carries archival character.
     7 teachers work nowadays at the chair of sculpture: the professor V. Shvetsov - the head of the chair, leader of the educational-creative studio; the professor, academician V. Chepelyk - leader of the educational-creative studio; the professor, academician V. Boroday - leader of post-graduate studios; the senior teacher B. Mazur - supervisor of the I-st year students; the senior teacher O. Redko - supervisor of the second year students, senior lecturer A. Gonchar - supervisor of the third year students, senior teacher B. Lysenko - assistant of the educational-creative studios of the IV, V, VI-th year students; the senior teacher Yu. Kyseliov - teacher of a sculpture at the department of restoration (I-V years of studying).
     The following disciplines are taught: sculpture, composition, technique and technology of sculptural materials, firm materials. The different forms of training - giving of courses of lectures on technology of sculptural materials, composition, synthesis of architecture and sculpture are applied; practical studies - sculpture, drawing, composition, firm materials, forming from plaster and other materials; educational-creative summer practice providing performance of tasks in different materials (ceramics, wood, bronze, stone, galvanic plastic art etc.). More traditional materials are used for the performance of academic statements.
     Students carry out academic and creative tasks on industrial bases, such as the Kiev association "Artist"; the Ukrainian -American common enterprise, "European Casting" in Vyshneve town; the institute of superfirm materials by the academician V. Bakul, in particular.
     The professorate and the teaching staff of the chair are engaged in scientific work on the plans authorised by the chair for the period of one and five years. The carried out scientific - methodical work is directed on improvement of the existing and elaboration of new, advanced methods of teaching sculpture and composition, use of the newest various materials for creation of modern compositions, on the development of the methodical offers, activation of personal creative work.
     The artists - teachers of the chair work actively as creators in the field of sculptural art, in the area of easel and monumental plastics, in particular. Well-known sculptors - the members of the chair created famous products of Ukrainian easel and monumental art in different time. A good parameter of appropriate professional training of young artists at the academy has become an embodiment in life of a number of degree works of the graduates of the department of sculpture, that is the significant contribution to the development of art culture of Ukraine.
