The studio was created in 1994 as a structural division of the chair of painting and composition. Since then it is headed by the valid member of the Academy of arts of Ukraine, people's artist of Ukraine, winner of the National premium of Ukraine named by Taras Shevchenko, professor M. Storozhenko . Several graduations of the young artists have already been carried out. The establishment of the studio was caused by wide expansion of construction of temples in Ukraine, which consequently led to a sharp requirement for the experts in artistic decorating of new built cult structures and restoration of ancient products of sacred art. It is also confirmed by its complete name: the educational-creative studio of painting and cathedral culture.
The basic methodological and aesthetic principles of the studio are lain in the structure of the educational process, which is based on the art traditions of Byzantium, Ukrainian baroque, Kyiv-Pechersk school of the XVII-XVIII centuries, innovations of the Ukrainian art of 1920-30-th of the last century and criterion of traditional, actually, base school of the National academy of fine art and architecture. The professional specialization of the students begins at the III-d year of studying and finishes with the fulfilment of degree work at the VI-th year of studying. During the first and second years of studying students receive general academic preparation.
The training at the studio is carried out on two conducting programs: the academic - scientific program (drawing, painting, composition) and copying-religious one (copying of old samples of icon painting of the times of Byzantium and Ukrainian baroque). Thus the academic program does not contradict realistic world outlook but only sharpen the sense of a form; the tasks on copying promote "the internal vision" to start functioning, which helps to comprehend the specificity of the genre deeper. The harmonious association of two directions in the educational-creative process provides professional synthesis reflected in the degree projects.
By creative practice on samples of art products of Byzantium (at the III-IV-th years of studying), Ukrainian and world baroque (at the IV-V-th years of studying), the student studies styles of the religious art, discovers for himself a technique of drawing of colour layers, secrets of materials (egg tempera, canvas primed on a board, gilding, relief, board etc.). Fulfilling the educational tasks, except for the realized approach, there is also irrational process - an original sacrament through a touch to prayed picturesque masterpieces of the XI-XVIII centuries (Byzantian baroque art). Exactly the analytic-copying experience in a complex with academic knowledge provides appropriate art synthesis in created samples of sacred painting. |
