Тheatre department was created in the Academy in the 1920s. It had a name "Theatre-photo-cinema department" at the faculty of painting. It was headed by V.Meller, V.Tatlin, M. Tryaskin. The artist M. Bernshtein, P. Golubyatnykov, K. Yeleva, V. Palmov, M. Umansky, L. Chupyatov and others were invited to teach. At the beginning of the 1930s theatre-cinema-photo department was re-named "theatre", in the 1950s it was re-named "theatre-decorative department". The chief of the studio was M. Dukhnovsky, S. Podervyansky taught drawing and painting. Paid much attention to giving students professional knowledge on special subjects: producing, material culture, technique and technology of the theatre production.
     The long period of teaching at the theatre-decoration department is related to the teaching of professor D. Lider, who headed the department and the studio of staging in 1975-1980, 1990-2001. In 1997 the studio of staging was divided into two and was headed by assistant professor O. Burlin. At the same time the studio on training artists of cinema and television was created and headed by R. Adamovych.
     Since 2002, the studio headed by D. Lider, has been headed by assistant professor A. Kyrychenko. In her work she used the principles of work created by D. Lider. Much attention is paid to the exposure individual peculiarities of students, training them skills in comprehension of dramatic material, making play producing in many aspects, understanding the category of good and evil in the real life and revealing them on stage.
     Much attention is paid to the enrichment of educational and professional knowledge, broadening the outlook of an artist by means of the subjects - producing, ethics, aesthetics, history of costume, technique and technology of theatre production and visiting theatres, concerts and etc.
     The studio trained many experts who took the first roles in the art of cinema, theatre, television in Ukraine and abroad.
