In connection with the returning to the Kiev art institute of its first historical name - the Ukrainian art academy it became necessary to restore the studio of historical painting at this educational institution and thus to continue tradition begun in the first years of the establishment of the academy. The studio was created in 1993 and F. Gumeniuk became its leader. The educational program based on the general academic program of education of the future artists was developed according to the requirements of a genre of historical painting, taking into account the experience of leading academies of Europe, where the historical genre was considered almost the major one.
     Taking from a nature is the main form of work in the educational-creative studio and the training on this process is based on indissoluble connection of composition, drawing, tone and colour correlation. The system of training is directed on providing the development of figurative thinking of the student, arsenal of his aesthetic concepts and ideas about beauty, its nature, structure; understanding of form and its revealing: the skill to determine and appreciate the role and place of the man in the world, his spiritual life, destination etc., or with another words, it is necessary to make the artist - creator of the student.
     The mastering achievements of world painting and their practical usage in a complex with the national traditions is the basis of the training. The precisely defined realistic direction dominates at the studio: the reality is perceived as a material, as a subject of supervision and reflection of its essence and variety of the form, as relations of the man with a nature. The main criterion there is documentary reflection of the reality. One of the most important tasks of training is to teach students to possess all possible means of art, as it is impossible to create high-grade art product without high professionalism.
     The experience of the masters of our country and the foreign ones is learned at the studies on composition with wide use of an illustrative material. The purpose to learn to draw not static stages, closed, unequivocal, but to be able to feel and to reconstruct dynamics of life, alive perception of the reality and past, to create figurative compositions, to aspire to embrace infinity is put before the students.
     Nine-years functioning of the educational-creative studio of historical painting in the walls of the National academy of fine art and architecture, the degree pictures on historical themes of its apprentices O. Biedarieva, I. Godunova, A. Gonchar, Yu. Kuindzhi, G. Pavlenko, O. Pazych, O. Sorokina testify to the importance of business of preservation and further development of classical school traditions and education of young creative artists.
     Having finished the training at the studio the young artists continue actively their work in a genre of historical painting, take part in numerous exhibitions, some of them become the members of the National artists' union of Ukraine, and Russia also. In particular, apprentices of the studio O. Sorokina, O. Biedarieva, A. Gonchar together with the leader F. Gumeniuk have made icons for the church of the intercession of the Holy Virgin in Kyiv, Andriy Gonchar has executed several murals in the Mykhaylivsky cathedral and St Sofia cathedral in Kyiv.
