Well-known artist in graphics G. I. Narbut, which headed the educational-creative studio of graphics in 1917-1920, laid the bases of the newest art - graphic education in Ukraine in the walls of the Ukrainian art academy.
The polygraphic faculty led by the professor A. Kh. Sereda was opened in 1924, when the educational institution took the name the Kiev art institute (KAI). This faculty and also similar faculties of Kharkiv and Odessa art institutes formed the basis of the Ukrainian polygraphic institute, which was created in Kharkiv in 1930. Since then the Kiev art institute did not prepare artists in graphics for a long time.
Only in 1945 the educational-creative studio appeared at the faculty of painting of KAI, and a separate faculty and chair of graphics with three educational-creative studios (of book graphic design, easel graphics and poster art) appeared in 1948. A studio of the political poster started to work at the faculty of graphics in 1974, which was reorganized into the educational-creative studio of graphic design in 1988.
Since 1948 the professors V. I. Kasian, O. S. Pashchenko, M. T. Popov headed the chair of graphic arts; the professor V. K. Shostya has been leading the faculty since 1992. Five educational-creative studios work at the faculty of graphic arts nowadays: of free graphics - led by the professor A. V. Chebykin; of free graphics - led by professor M. I. Kompanets; of book graphics - by the professor G. I. Galynska; of book graphic design and introligation - by the professor V. Ya. Chebanyk; of graphic design - by the professor V. K. Shostya.
Except the named professors - teachers heading the educational-creative studios, the subjects on speciality at the faculty are taught by the professor V. D. Sergeev (deep print), professor M. T. Popov (flat print), senior lecturer V. O. Vandalovsky (high print), professor M. I. Yakovlev (basis of composition), senior lecturer O. M. Mikula (composition, photographics, techniques of stencil sieve printing), senior teachers V. M. Kyrychenko (composition), L. V. Barko (computer graphics), teacher O. V. Petrenko (course of a font).
Since 1993 the faculty has been training artists in graphics of highest qualification providing them the Master's degree. The best graduates from higher art educational institutions of Ukraine and foreign countries win the possibility of doing an assistance-probationer course on a competitive basis. The outstanding Ukrainian artist, the academician G. V. Yakutovych led this creative-pedagogical direction and the academician M. G. Deregus passed his large creative experience and skill to the young graphics until recent times. The leading experts of the chair the academician A. V. Chebykin, professors G. I. Galynska, M. I. Kompanets, V. Ya. Chebanyk, V. K. Shostya work there with the assistants - trainees.
The chair has an educational-methodical laboratory of graphic arts (the study of graphics. A number of industrial practice laboratories, in particular: laboratory of flat print, laboratory of high print, laboratory of deep print, laboratory of folding and print, laboratory of computer graphics, laboratory of photographics and stencil sieve printing, laboratory of prototyping are there at the chair.
Art exhibitions are realized both in the chair's premises, and outside the academy - in different exhibition halls of Kyiv and abroad. Thus exhibitions of prints had a success in Munich (Germany), Toulouse (France), Wrotslaw (Poland) etc.
