The chair is a structural division of the architectural faculty, which provides training and graduation of architects and architects - artists.
     It organises educational process - provides teaching the disciplines, stipulated by the educational program, preparation of experts competent of areas: the theory of restoration of architectural monuments; the surrounding approach to a question of reconstruction, regeneration and building in historical zones; modern problems of architecture.
     The training is carried out in complex: lectures, practical studies, seminars, design practice.
     The peculiarity of the academic system of higher art education is preparation of experts in educational-creative studios under the direction of famous masters in architecture that provides individual form of training.
     The outstanding practising architects are involved in pedagogical work, that is one of the powerful levers in the tradition of a higher school. The pedagogical structure of each studio includes not only its leader, but also a regular teacher - adviser and teacher working in combination. The skilled practising architects, which are engaged in real designing, and also teachers - specialists in methods of training with appropriate experience of work form pedagogical personnel of the faculty in the whole. A. Dobrovolsky, M. Katonin, P. Kostyrko, B. Pryimak, N. Chmutina, I. Shemsedinov stood at the head of the studios in different times.
     During many years the chair of architectural designing was supervised by the professor M. Katernoga - outstanding architect - teacher, theorist of architecture, one of the best apprentices of V. Zabolotny. The professor Yu. Chekanyuk, merited artist of Ukraine, became the head of the chair in 1991and had been leading it till his sudden death in 2001. Since then the candidate in architecture, senior lecturer A. Davydov, the graduate of the faculty of architecture in 1981, has been standing at the head of the chair.
     Five educational-creative studios led by the famous practising architects: the professor L. Skoryk; professor G. Dobrovolska; the president of the Ukrainian branch of IKOMOS, pro-rector on scientific work NAFAA, professor L. Prybeha; the president of National union of the architects of Ukraine, professor I. Shpara; the senior lecturer A. Antonyuk work at the chair nowadays.
     11 teachers in total work at the chair. Among them there are 10 teachers - producers working in combination, 4 professors, 3 senior lecturers; 4 senior teachers, 4 assistants - trainees.
     The preparation of the highly skilled architects - designers is the basic task of the chair; architectural designing is the conducting discipline there.
     The teachers of the chair are engaged not only in the pedagogical activity, but also in scientific-research work on such thematic directions as the formation of town-planning structures of different levels; bases of designing of dwelling; bases of designing of public structures; the complex designing in conditions of the surrounding approach; problems of synthesis of architecture and monumental art; problems of planning and development of villages of Ukraine. The teachers of the chair have prepared the methodical manuals on each of the concrete themes.
In 1995 the assistance-probationer course for two trainees was created at the chair. The professor L. Skoryk worked out the program of the educational course.
     Creative potential of the teachers is realized in practical activity in the field of designing public structures and dwelling, fine art, synthesis of architecture and sculpture, monumental art, book and easel design etc.
     The quality of preparation of experts passes control at annual surveys - competitions of the degree projects of the graduates of architectural educational institutions, where apprentices of the chair receive high awards each year.
     The teachers and students take part in competitions in our country and abroad, work at the board of adjudicators at competitions, come out with the reports and messages at conferences, methodical meetings, publish scientific works on the history, theory and methods of architectural designing etc. The chair's staff is selected by the members of the Specialized council on defence of a candidate thesis of the academy.
     The chair carries out international relations following the program of the international activity of the academy. It carries out such activities as: the annual training of the students of the chair under the program of the national committee IKOMOS (since 1995) - during three summer months; training of the teachers of the chair at the faculty of architecture at University Sant-Lucas (Belgium) - during 1998-2001; participation in the international program on elaboration of the new concept of preparation of architects (University Sant-Lucas, Belgium - the faculty of architecture NAFAA).
     The outstanding Canadian architect Radoslav Zhuk, the professor of the Academy of architecture of the University Mc'Gill headed the state examination commission of the chair in 1998-2000 and gave the course of lectures on the theme "Traditions and tendencies of the development of modern architecture".
     The members of the chair also actively participate in the public work on the programs of the National academy of fine art and architecture, Ukrainian academy of architecture, IKOMOS, National architects' union, Ukrainian society on protection of architectural monuments, history and culture, City-planning council of Kyiv.
     The chair is supplied with necessary premises, equipment and materials. The supply of the educational process by modern means for film showing, copying of graphic and text materials remains the problem question. There is a lack of computers with the software packages for carrying out the tasks on professional disciplines.
     In the whole the chair of architectural designing is the leading one in the system of the faculty from the point of view of scientific and educational work on the preparation of architectural staff.
