The National Academy of fine art and architecture inherits the Ukrainian academy of fine art founded in 1917 on the initiative of outstanding scientists, artists and cultural workers - the First president of Ukraine, academician M. Grushevsky; scientists - D. Antonovych and G. Pavlutsky; artists -V. Krychevsky, F. Krychevsky, M. Boychuk, O. Murashko, G. Narbut, M. Burachek, M. Zhuk, A. Manevych.
In 1922 the academy was transformed into the institute of plastic arts and after the amalgamation with the Kyiv institute of Architecture in 1924 took the title of the Kyiv Institute of fine art. On 17th of December 1992 by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine the institution was returned its first name -The Ukrainian academy of fine art. On the 17th of March 1998 in accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine it took another title - the Academy of fine art and architecture.
By the resolution of the Ukrainian State accrediting commission of 8 July 1997 (minutes # 90) the academy was accredited with the fourth level of education, and attested by the approval of 23 November 1999 (minutes # 23).
During the years of its existence the academy has become the main higher educational institution that obtained preparation of professionals in Ukrainian fine art and architecture. About 7 thousand specialists have been trained there, world - famous art schools of M.Boychuk, G.Narbut, F.Krychevsky were framed there. The works of the talented graduates from the academy such as O. Pavlenko, I. Padalka, M. Rokytsky, O. Sakhnovska, V. Sedlyar, S. Grygoriev, K. Yeleva, V. Zabolotny, V. Kostetsky, G. Melikhov, F. Nirod, O. Pashchenko, T. Yablonska, P. Biletsky, V. Boroday, M. Vronsky, T. Golembiyevska, V. Gurin, O. Danchenko, V. Zabashta, O. Kovalev, O. Lopukhov, O. Oliynyk, A. Plamenytsky, M. Popov, V. Puzyrkov, I. Selivanov, M. Storozhenko, M. Khmelko, V. Chebanyk, V. Chekanyuk, V. Chepelyk, V. Shatalin, V. Shostya, G. Yakutovych and many others became heritage of the Ukrainian national culture.
In the last decade new specializations were opened, the quantity of educational creative studios increased to 25 nowadays. Students obtain knowledge and skills on many art specialities there under the leadership of the prominent teachers-artists.
The studios on easel painting are headed by professors M. Guyda, F. Gumenyuk, V. Gurin, O. Lopukhov, V. Shatalin; studio of painting and cathedral culture - professor M. Storozhenko; studio of monumental painting- professor O. Kozhekov; studio of theatre-decorative painting - professor D. Lider, senior lecturer A. Kyrychenko and senior lecturer O. Burlin; the studio of training of artists for cinema and television - senior lecturer R. Adamovych; the studios on restoration of works of art - senior lecturers O. Minzhulin, M. Tytov; the studio of free graphics - professors M. Kompanets, A. Chebykin; studios on book graphic art - professors G. Galynska, V. Chebanyk; studio of graphic design - professor V. Shostya; studios on sculpture - professors V. Chepelyk, V. Shvetsov; studios on architectural designing - professors I. Shpara, L. Pribeha, L. Skoryk, G. Dobrovolska, senior lecturer D. Antonyuk. The academy is the world known art institution. Its achievements in educational and scientific activity, in the training of creative and scientific-pedagogical specialists, strong scientific-creative potential and great part as an organizer of working out the important trends in preparation of professionals made it one of the leaders among higher educational institutions of art education in Ukraine. The matter of education is greatly renewed here; new methods of training specialists are put into operation. The educational institution keeps on scientific and creative contacts with the universities of Holland, Greece, Spain and Poland and other countries.
For its significant achievements in educational and scientific activity, high contribution into the training of artists and scientific-pedagogical specialists, great part in the working out the important trends in preparation of professionals, the Ukrainian Academy of fine art and architecture was given the status of the national higher educational institution by the Decree of the President of Ukraine of 11 September 2000 (#1059/2000).
The post-graduate department has been functioning at the Academy from 1992 in order to train personnel of high qualification in the field of fine art (speciality -"Fine Art") and architecture (speciality -"Theory and history of architecture and restoration of architectural monuments"). The Specialized council of a thesis defence was created in order to provide post-graduate department with successful functioning. The Master's degree on specialities "Painting", "Graphics", "Sculpture" and "Architecture of buildings and constructions " has been obtained in the assistance-probationer department since 1993. The first group of Masters graduated in 1996.
About 800 students study at the Academy nowadays, among them 30 students from foreign countries. The Academy has contemporary educational-methodical and financial-technical foundation: three educational buildings, hostel, scientific library, museum, laboratories. Educational and scientific-creative process is insured by 12 chairs where 23 academicians and corresponding members of the Art academy of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture work, 47 doctor in sciences, professors, 44 candidates in sciences, senior lecturers, 59 teachers have honorable ranks, 11 educational specialists won the National premium of Ukraine named by Taras Shevchenko. The scientific potential of the Academy gains 62%.
Students of the Academy successfully represent the educational institution at the international exhibitions. The fact that citizens of foreign countries obtain their art education there brings the Academy high international reputation.
The National Academy of fine art and architecture took and takes an essential part in forming of spiritual society, in the task of increase of spiritual value of the Ukrainian state.
