The chair of the theory and history of art
 

     The faculty of theory and history of art was founded in 1959 by the initiative of the Honored Master of art of Ukraine, art critic P. Govdya who headed it till 1964. Then M. Tyshchenko became the dean of the faculty; in 1974-1986 - bachelor of art criticism - G. Yukhymets (the graduate of the faculty); in 1986-1991 - bachelor of art criticism, docent I. Belichko. Since 1991 the dean of the faculty is V. Dzhulai (the graduate of the faculty). During the years of its existence the faculty had trained 800 specialists.
     The students of the faculty study at two daytime departments such as: "Art-criticism. Theory and history of art" and "Art-criticism, organization and management of art culture" and at one correspondence course (about 180 students). The most capable graduates can continue their study at the post graduate course which was founded in 1991.
    At this faculty students study the history of Ukrainian art and world art and the history of the development of the national art culture.
Besides these subjects, the students also study aesthetics, the history of literature, music, theatre, cinema, archeology, restoration etc.
     In 1992-1993 the faculty began training specialists-managers in the field of organization and management of the development of art culture. Besides general art subjects the students of this department study the principles of management, economics and law.
The faculty trains art critics of wide profile who can work at different art institutions, publishing houses, higher educational establishments and commercial structures. Teaching process is directed at training art critics, mainly for Ukraine, but at the same time students from different countries, such as, Greece, Russia, Vietnam, Moldova, Turkmenistan and Finland were studying there too.
     Among the teachers of the faculty are academicians L. Milyaeva, M. Krivolapov, O. Fedoruk, professors I. Belichko, A. Zavarova, V. Fomenko, docents V. Dzhulai, O. Lagutenko, L. Lysenko, O. Maslenkova, V. Mogilevsky, senior teachers O. Govdya, V. Klevayev.
Some graduates of the faculty have become academicians, doctors and bachelors of art. They work at the Institute of art criticism, folk-lore and ethnology; Institute of archeology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; at higher educational establishments, museums, publishing houses, art galleries etc.
