The first Architectural institute in Ukraine created in Kyiv in 1918 became the background of the formation of the faculty. The initiative group of its founders included well - known architects and civil engineers O. Verbytsky, M. Damilovsky, D. Dyachenko, the artists F. Krasytsky, M. Kozyk. Later the pedagogical structure was filled up with apprentices of the Petersburg art academy P. Alioshyn, V. Rykov, V. Feldman, and also engineers - builders, known at that time, B. Gorbunov, S. Kolotov, P. Khaustov, with the academicians D. Grave, K. Syminsky, researcher of architectural monuments I. Morgilevsky. The institute settled down in the territory of the Sofia cathedral, in the former house of metropolitan. There were 11 students then.
The educational programs were made taking in consideration the positive experience of European schools and the best pre-revolutionary educational institutions of Russia. A serious attention was paid to the bases of architecture, study of the traditions of the Ukrainian people's architecture, history of the Ukrainian architecture and art, building legislation, economy of settlements, political economy and political education. The fusion of art, technical-engineering and theoretical disciplines with practical skills in conditions of industrial building determined the orientation of the educational process. However, despite of rather authoritative teachers' staff, the institute could not be ratified and ensure its further existence.
In 1924, after the Ukrainian art academy was transformed into the Institute of plastic arts, its amalgamation with the Architectural institute was held. The new established educational institution was named as the Kiev art institute, which had two faculties: architectural and painting - sculptural. The amalgamation of two related educational institutions became significant event in cultural life of Ukraine. The orientation of educational-creative tasks started changing: borrowing and attempts of revival of ancient styles were condemned, realistic orientation became the basis of architectural creativity, which was based on progressive methods of construction, rational functional importance of new structures and use of modern building materials.
The architectural faculty became the leading at the institute. The entrance examinations were general for the entrants of creative specialities. The first year students of the architectural and painting - sculptural faculties had general theoretical and practical disciplines. The professional specialization began at the second year of studying maintaining creative relations between the mentioned faculties. Structurally the faculty consisted of projecting-creative studios for designing cultural - educational and administrative structures, dwelling, medical and industrial buildings, cities and large settlements, internal design of structures.
Well - known skilled architects - masters, practising - producers led the studios. The artist - designer V. Tatlin, theatre artist M. Tryaskin, painters M. Kozyk, A. Cherkassky, sculptor and drawer M. Epshtein, architect - artist V. Feldman taught the formal - technical disciplines - drawing, colour, volume, space and creation of tasks on composition on themes "Dynamics", "Asymmetry", " Balance" of the architectural forms in different years. The professor V. Krychevsky headed the studios of internal design of buildings and measurements of architectural monuments. The professor B. Sakulin was invited from Moscow for giving lectures on course of planning of cities and settlements.
The professors B. Gorbunov, K. Engel, A. Zharsky, G. Zayberlikh, V. Motsok, N. Stolyarov, M. Terpugov taught the technical-engineering disciplines, the academicians D. Grave and Yu. Sokolov taught higher mathematics. The most gifted senior students were involved in teaching. Thus the IVth - year student S. Grabovsky was the professor's S. Kolotov assistant on descriptive geometry and perspective, the Vth - year students V. Zabolotny and P. Yurchenko worked as assistants for the professor P. Alioshyn on architectural designing. The teaching of disciplines was carried out by a principle of creative processing of architectural tasks by the students on the basis of synthetic connection of spatial arts and building engineering.
The program of the course "Architectural designing" provided perfect acquaintance with the theory of the architectural forms and methods of their analysis, fulfilment of many tasks on composition with designing of structures of different purpose. The creative works submitted to the concrete requirements of building practice of that time taking into account innovative searches of "Bauhaus", "VKhuTeMas" (the Higher art-technical studios).
Participating together with the teachers in competitions, the students took deep possession of creative and building-industrial technology, won prestige to their architectural school.
At the end of the 1920-th the graduates of the faculty projected power stations, metallurgical combines, shops of tractor factories, developed the general plans of large cities. A. Zabolotny, P. Golovchenko, A .Matushevych, O. Khorkhot, O. Sheremet, P. .Shpara and others became well - known practising architects and organizers of building business of steel. The first graduates of the faculty played important role in the development of architectural education and scientific-research work.
During 1930-th the creative orientation of training consisted in critical mastering of the architectural inheritance, analysis of its past achievements with comprehension of the real requirements of the present, concerning idea, functions, technology of materials. After numerous reorganizations, little connected really to professional questions, the faculty gained a special authority among architectural schools of the USSR at the end of the 30-th. The greatest pre-war graduation - 36men - was held in summer 1940. 20 architects graduated in 1941, and in 1942, during the war when the institute was in evacuation in Samarkand, the diplomas of the architects - artists received 7 men.
After war the graduates of the architectural faculty took the leadership over regional and town departments on construction and architecture, occupied posts of the main architects, main engineers of regional executive committee administrations on capital construction, heads of design institutes and organizations, scientific-research divisions, teachers of higher educational institutions. Musical-drama theatres in Poltava, Rivne, Lutsk, Lugansk; the ensemble of the former Exhibition of achievements of the national economy of the Ukrainian SSR in Kiev; palaces of culture, cinemas in cities of Donbass; educational institutions in Kharkov, Sailor's club in Sevastopol were erected under the projects of the apprentices of the architectural faculty during 1930-th. The authors of the mentioned architectural structures were Ye.Galperin, M.Katernoga, L.Kyreev, O.Krylov, O.Lukyanenko, F.Maistrenko, I.Mezentsev, I.Mynko, I.Fialko.
With the establishment of the Academy of architecture of Ukraine, which basis is mainly formed with the graduates of the Kiev art institute, preparation of the scientific staff grew active in Ukraine, the capital works on the theory and history of the Ukrainian architecture were executed and published.
Famous professors O. Vlasov, Ye. Katonin, B. Rukhlyadiev, M. Severov, and also scientists - graduates of the 1920-th M. Grechyna, I. Maloziomov replenished the pedagogical structure of the faculty in post war time. The post-graduate students of the academy I. Kosarevsky, G. Grauzhis, N. Chmutina worked there as assistants. 178 architects graduated from the art institute during 1945-1960.
In 1960-1980 the admission of students increased up to 50 persons, which was caused by increase of dwelling and industrial construction in volume. The new disciplines were added to the educational plan: town-planning preparation, landscape architecture, restoration of architectural monuments and formation of new urban surroundings in view of existing structures and monuments of material culture. The new qualitative level of preparation of the architects was provided due to the practical creative experience of the architects A. Dobrovolsky, G. Dobrovolska, M. Katernoga, Ya. Kovbasa, O. Malyshenko, B. Pryimak, M. Stepanov, N. Chmutina, which were invited for teaching, and also activity of the creatively gifted young architects L. Skoryk, V. Agafonov, Yu. Chekanyuk.
Taking into account the requirements of architectural - building practice, the requirement to prove theoretically principles of synthetic association of different kinds of fine arts with architecture in particular, the chair of the theory, history of architecture and synthesis of arts was created at the faculty in 1974. With the development of scientific and technical progress the programs and courses of a number of new disciplines were elaborated, such as: "Bases of computer science", "Application of computer facilities in designing", "Sociology of town-planning", "Protection of environment", "Synthesis of arts" etc.
Participation in competitions on the best projects in our country and abroad promotes creative rise of the students of the faculty. 56 students became winners and took diplomas of the most prestigious competitions only during 1980-2000.
The traditional forms of training on speciality of the architect - artist are and always were co-ordinated with the new, untraditional approaches. The appearance of modern computer technologies brings in essential changes to a technique of teaching of many disciplines. And still, despite of it, the preparation on drawing and painting is carried out on the basis of academic study of the best products of fine art, and the priority form of professional training on architecture is the system of personal educational studios, which are led by the famous architects - professors G. Dobrovolska, L. Prybeha, L. Skoryk, I. Shpara, senior lecturer D. Antonyuk.
During the years of the existence the architectural faculty of the National academy of fine art and architecture has prepared more than 1500 architects, has got wide educational experience and is deservedly considered the patriarch of architectural education in Ukraine.
